POSITION OF EMPLOYMENT - UNDER KEEPER

A private and progressive Estate in Derbyshire requires an Under keeper to assist with the running 10-15 days shooting for the family and to work alongside the current Head Gamekeeper. The shooting will be both pheasant and partridge from cover crops and woodlands. The Estate consists of mixed farmland currently undergoing organic conversion which is farmed in hand, fishery and woodland. 

In addition to the traditional duties of a keeper (such as vermin control and releasing), the successful candidate will be expected to balance a shoot with the demands of the future whilst furthering conservation, biodiversity and habitat management. 

Further duties will include maintaining and improving the woodlands in conjunction with the forestry consultants, fencing and hedge management and assisting with an infrastructure improvement program over the next few years injunction with the Estate Team. It is expected there will be cross over at key times during the year with the Fisheries and Estate Team as and when required.

Good communication skills with those on and off the Estate are vitally important.

Bransdale Moor - Experienced Grouse Beat Keeper

The Farndale Estate on the North York Moors is seeking an experienced Grouse Beat Keeper with a modern and forward-thinking approach to moorland management to join the upland keepering team on Bransdale Moor. An ability to work as part of a large mixed upland and lowland keepering team and the ability to offer and maintain extremely high standards of work is essential.

A full driving license and current shotgun and firearms licenses are a requirement, and any additional qualifications would be an advantage but a willingness to undertake additional training as required will be neccersary.

GAMEKEEPER/FORESTER REQUIRED

 

A private and historic Estate in East Leicestershire requires a Gamekeeper/Forester to run 6-7 days shooting for the family. The shooting will be both pheasant and partridge from cover crops and woodlands.

 

The Estate consists of mixed farmland and woodland laid out for sport by Victorian ancestors; indeed, the history of shooting on this Estate has been traced back to a keeper appointed by an ancestor in 1730. The Estate extends to around 4000 acres with some 29 woods and a dozen staff are employed across the Estate.

 

In addition to the traditional duties of a keeper (such as vermin control, rearing and releasing) to produce days of around 250 head, the successful candidate will be expected to balance a traditional past with the demands of the future whilst furthering conservation.  Good communication skills with those on and off the Estate are important, as is the desire and the ability to contribute to the future smooth operation of all the family Estates.

 

Further duties will include maintaining, improving and planting woodlands and estate trees, minor tree safety work, fencing and hedge laying, but no working at height will be expected.

 

In the longer term the candidate may be required to set up an Estate base to enable him or her to produce a minor timber income stream.

To be based at the principle’s property near Stamford, Northamptonshire with occasional work (inc. overnight stays) on the family’s premises in Oxfordshire.

 

The ideal candidate must be able to fulfil a variety of roles and have a flexible approach to working hours and a can-do attitude. The position can be broken into three areas:

 

  1. Chauffeur/Loader
    Driving the principle, and two gun dogs, to and around estates across the UK. Assist with the shooting kit, load during the shoot, clean the guns at the end of the day and look after the dogs while away.

  2. Estate Maintenance
    To work as part of the team to assist with the gardens and estate repairs. To cover areas such as fencing, grass cutting, painting, cleaning gutters and basic forestry work (chainsaw experience a bonus)

  3. Gamekeeping
    In preparation for the shooting season, to help the gamekeepers place birds in rearing pens, driving tractors to move equipment and occasionally loading for guests when not required by the principle.
