A private and historic Estate in East Leicestershire requires a Gamekeeper/Forester to run 6-7 days shooting for the family. The shooting will be both pheasant and partridge from cover crops and woodlands.
The Estate consists of mixed farmland and woodland laid out for sport by Victorian ancestors; indeed, the history of shooting on this Estate has been traced back to a keeper appointed by an ancestor in 1730. The Estate extends to around 4000 acres with some 29 woods and a dozen staff are employed across the Estate.
In addition to the traditional duties of a keeper (such as vermin control, rearing and releasing) to produce days of around 250 head, the successful candidate will be expected to balance a traditional past with the demands of the future whilst furthering conservation. Good communication skills with those on and off the Estate are important, as is the desire and the ability to contribute to the future smooth operation of all the family Estates.
Further duties will include maintaining, improving and planting woodlands and estate trees, minor tree safety work, fencing and hedge laying, but no working at height will be expected.
In the longer term the candidate may be required to set up an Estate base to enable him or her to produce a minor timber income stream.
