Latest on the recent Bird Flu outbreak

There have been a couple of reported Bird Flu outbreaks across England and Wales and we are therefore asking all of our members to be vigilant and report any dead captive or wild birds to the DEFRA Rural Services Helpline on 0300 020 0301. In Wales contact 0300 303 8268, failure to do so is an offence.

Confirmed outbreaks

On the 1 November 2021 the Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales confirmed that a case of H5N1 Avian Influenza (pathogen to be confirmed) has been found in poultry and wild birds at a premises near Wrexham. A 3km and a 10km temporary control zone has been put in place. Details of the Temporary Control Zone can be found here:

Premises near Droitwich Spa, Wychavon, Worcestershire

Avian influenza H5N1 was confirmed in captive birds (non-poultry) at a rescue centre near Droitwich Spa, Wychavon, Worcestershire on 26 October 2021. On 27 October, further testing has confirmed this to be a highly pathogenic strain (HPAI H5N1). All birds on the infected premises have been humanely culled.

Following a risk assessment the Protection Zone and Surveillance Zone have been amended and 3km and 10km Captive Bird (Monitoring) Controlled Zones have been declared around the premises.
