Following on from our letter to the ITV Calendar programme regarding their recent coverage of the Calderdale wildfire, one of the NGO's Development Officers had a phone call with ITV this week to discuss the broadcast.
We reiterated our concerns with the item, and the fact that gamekeepers' role in extinguishing the wildfire had been ignored. We also pointed out that this was not the first time that this had happened. ITV apologised for this, and stated that it was simply a matter of editing – in that they had to include what they believed were the most interesting and relevant parts of the interview.
The NGO explained to the ITV representatives about the wildfire protection work that gamekeepers carry out on the moors, and they were very interested to learn about this. We have followed up by sending them a selection of our YouTube videos on wildfires and controlled burning, and reiterated that we would be more than happy to help organise interviews or to supply further information.
We hope that by opening up this discussion channel with ITV we might see some of the good work that gamekeepers do featured on ITV Calendar. At the very least, they might remember to include mention of gamekeepers next time something like this happens. We will keep our members updated about any further progress!
