The Environment Minister has announced that the Government plans to introduce legislation to restrict lead ammunition by summer 2026.
Environment Minister Emma Hardy announced today (10 July) that the Government plans to introduce legislation to restrict lead ammunition by summer 2026, with a further three-year transition period running until 2029. This will mean that lead ammunition will have to cease for most uses by the summer of 2029.
This three-year transition period is shorter than the five-year transition proposed by the Health and Safety Executive, leaving less time for suppliers and manufacturers to adapt. The new legislation would outlaw shotgun pellets containing more than 1% lead, and bullets with more than 3%.
