The Government is of course right to check that it is acting within the law and we look forward to helping Defra with its review.

Responding to Defra's announcement on 11 September 2019 to carry out a review of gamebird releasing on protected sites, a spokesperson for the National Gamekeepers' Organisation (NGO) said:

"The Government is of course right to check that it is acting within the law and we look forward to helping Defra with its review. The release of gamebirds in accordance with the Code of Good Shooting Practice has never been shown to be detrimental, whilst the associated conservation benefits of shoot habitat management and predator control by gamekeepers have been shown time and again to have great benefits for wildlife in general. We will of course defend our members’ interests as Defra’s review progresses."
