A grouse moor in the springtime is one of Britain's most treasured habitat, bustling with wildlife and rare bird species. This spring an event was held by Conservation Communication bringing together high-level government officials, members of wildlife charities and those with a shooting interest. Tim Weston, our director of Policy, Politics and Environment attended this 24 hour event, called 'Why Moorlands Matter', for the NGO.
The idea is to increase knowledge, understanding and respect for Britain’s rural areas and their flora and fauna through the creation and sharing of powerful, educational, and informative events to introduce a broad and diverse audience to each other.
To have the opportunity to spend time with people who might have widely opposing views to you and to discuss the management techniques that are clearly working brought a new dimension to engagement with those from outside of game management.
As one chairman of a Wildlife Trust said at the end of the event "we can all learn from the gamekeepers here: you simply can't argue with abundance. We might never want to shoot but I can see how successful this management approach is".
